Online Montessori Primary Course

Guiding the Child from Concrete to Abstract, with Confidence and Curiosity

As children move into the Primary years (ages 6–12), their developmental needs shift, but the importance of a carefully prepared environment remains constant. This course supports student teachers in creating thoughtful, hands-on learning experiences while guiding children from concrete exploration to abstract understanding.

Preparing for a vocation as important as working with children, cannot be undermined. It requires not only commitment and passion, but also  a deep understanding of the growing child; their needs, their individual developmental paths, and their unique approaches to learning.  The training offered by Formative Age, founded by the dynamic Smruti Gopal, enriches the experience of educators, equipping them mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for their work with children.

What You Will Learn

This course prepares student teachers to present more advanced Montessori materials and concepts, while also fostering independent thinking, global awareness, and a love for lifelong learning. Each subject concludes with graded assignments such as album creation, material design, and project presentations.

📚 Core Montessori Curriculum

1. Advanced Exercises of Practical Life
Primary students are ready for greater challenges and responsibility. These exercises continue to refine motor skills, encourage creativity, and build independence and confidence through more complex tasks and skill-based activities.

2. Advanced Mathematics
Building on pre-primary foundations, children explore concepts such as:

  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Ratios
  • Peg boards and operations
Math and geometry are interconnected using tools like the Geometry Stick Material. Student teachers create worksheets and design a math-based game as part of their training.

3. Geometry
Students go deeper into geometric understanding, learning about angles and their types using specialized materials, fostering both visual and spatial intelligence.

4. Advanced Language
This includes:

  • Grammar and parts of speech using Montessori materials
  • Sentence structure analysis
  • Creative writing (essays, poetry, letter writing, book reports)
Student teachers learn how to assess writing using the Six Traits of Writing and are encouraged to write and evaluate their own compositions.

5. Advanced Cultural Studies
Primary students engage in rich explorations of:

  • History and world celebrations
  • Physical geography, botany, zoology, and a touch of chemistry
Student teachers design custom learning materials — including nomenclature cards, labeling sets, and projects such as Pollination presentations using handmade models.

6. The Great Lessons
These five foundational cosmic stories cover:

  • The beginning of the universe
  • The coming of life
  • The emergence of humans
  • The invention of writing and numbers
  • The story of civilization
These stories awaken wonder and a cosmic perspective in the child’s understanding of their place in the world.

🌟 Additional Subjects

Science Experiments
Teachers learn how to lead hands-on science activities, guiding students through hypothesis, observation, and conclusion. Each student teacher completes 5 experiments and compiles a Science Reference File with documentation and photos.

Meditation for Children
Introduces simple techniques such as breath awareness and sound meditation. Teachers are trained to lead sessions that promote emotional balance and inner calm.

Observations
Observation remains central to effective Montessori practice. Student teachers develop sharp observational skills to better understand the child’s needs, interests, and developmental stage — becoming the vital link between the child and their environment.
